Spring programs offer learning, entertainment for every age

March 30, 2022 11:40 AM

The Park Ridge Library spring program lineup looks a little more like pre-pandemic life, with several in-person programs for adults and a return to in-person Storytime in the Children’s department.

The Illinois Libraries Present series of author talks continues:

  • Join the library March 30 for an evening with the #1 New York Times bestselling author and award-winning humorist Jenny Lawson as she discusses her most recent memoir, Broken (in the best possible way). Lawson is a journalist, author, and blogger known for her great candor in sharing her struggle with mental illness. Her previous books Let’s Pretend This Never Happened and Furiously Happy were #1 New York Times bestsellers.
  • On April 27, actor/humorist/woodworker Nick Offerman will be in conversation with musician/hiking buddy Jeff Tweedy best known as the singer and guitarist of the band Wilco. Offerman, originally of Minooka, Ill., will be discussing his newest book, Where the Deer and the Antelope Play: The Pastoral Observations of One Ignorant American Who Loves to Walk Outside. Originally from Belleville, Ill., Tweedy has released 20 studio albums across his career and is the author of two books, including How to Write One Song: Loving the Things We Create and How They Love Us Back.

The Library will host the Park Ridge Community Blood Drive on Thursday, April 7, from noon to 5 p.m. To make an appointment, call 847-720-3280 or register online at parkridgelibrary.org.

The Park Ridge Public Library Classic Film Series resumes its “Legends of Laughter” series after the events were postponed in March 2020. The series looks back at the screwball comedies of the 1930s and early 1940s, continuing this Thursday at 7 p.m. with The Awful Truth in the Library’s first floor meeting room. No registration is required, but attendance is limited to 50 people.

An array of opportunities for lifelong learning – including presentations for families and a live concert for adults -- will be held this spring:

  • Gail Benedetto will present her insider’s knowledge of traveling in Switzerland on Tuesday, April 5, at 7 p.m.
  • A Different Way of Thinking, for families with kids ages 8 and up, will be held April 9 from 1 to 1:30 p.m. virtually. Conductor Cody will combine magic, comedy and storytelling to share what it’s like being autistic.
  • “Songs of the Vietnam War,” held ahead of Memorial Day, will feature Kathryn and John Atwood of the History Singers, on May 10 at 2 p.m.

The Studio and Media Lab have returned to in-person classes including an origami paper dress greeting card and an instructional demonstration of the Cricut Design Space software.

Popular recurring programs like the Writers Group, Chair Yoga are offered in both in-person and virtual formats. Additionally, the Open Knitting and Crocheting Nights will continue on the first Thursday of each month, and all levels are welcome.

For additional creative options, a May 3 painting workshop and a May 31 craft workshop on felting, both sponsored by Marion’s Mark, will round out the season.

Patrons can register for programs online at parkridgelibrary.libcal.com or at any service desks at the Library, or by calling 847-825-3123.
