The Library’s Children’s Services team has been working diligently on a reorganization of the picture book collection to make books easier to find by topic, for both kids and their caregivers. The collection has been broken down into more specific categories. Each book has a label identifying the topic in words and with an icon (i.e., “Things That Go” will have an icon of a truck) help the reader find their favorite subject more easily.

Prior to the reorganization, the majority of the picture books were organized by author.“For many years our picture book collection featured a small boutique section of books grouped by categories like Dinosaurs and Popular Characters,” said Youth Services Manager Staci Greenwald. “Those items were consistently checked out at a higher rate than the rest of the collection. Additionally, we find that many visitors are looking for picture books on specific topics. Taking the boutique model further and organizing the rest of collection by categories should allow for better discoverability and felt like a natural step to better meet the community’s needs.”
“Everyone is welcome to stop in while we’re temporarily set up in the meeting room during the reorganizing process, but we’re really looking forward to our young patrons perusing the collection in this new way,” said Greenwald.
The department will reopen to the public on Tuesday, August 19, at 9 a.m.
