On building a writing habit

If you’re considering ramping up your writing practice in the new year, consider joining the Park Ridge Writers Group, which meets on the second Wednesday of each month at the Library.

To learn more, check out the Writers Group display in our second floor lobby, then visit the Writers Group Anthology on our website to read more of their work.

Below, Library Specialist Kelly Mayer offers a few tips to help get you started – or restarted. Mayer moderates the Park Ridge Writers Group.

4 Tips to Build a Writing Habit in the New Year

  1. Pick a time of day to dedicate at least half an hour to writing and try to hold to that time. I used to be a 10 p.m.-to-midnight kind of writer, but as I get older, 10 a.m. to noon is more my speed.
  2. Need some encouragement? Give yourself a treat while writing. A delicious cup of coffee or hot chocolate with whipped cream. Something to savor!
  3. Set realistic goals in the beginning. One thousand words seems daunting? Try 100 words! As you build your writing habit, you can increase your word count. As you build your writing habit, the words will come easier.
  4. Never start on a Monday! Writer Anne Lamott claims, “Mondays are not good writing days.” I love a Tuesday morning for a fresh page full of possibilities.
