Why Is the Library being remodeled?
Because the Library is a popular gathering place, we also want it to be one of the most welcoming places in the community. We are excited about starting a renovation that will create a vibrant, contemporary space.
The Park Ridge Public Library has been serving the community since 1913. The current library was built in 1958 and an addition was added in 1977 that doubled the size of the building. After three decades, our much loved and used Library is showing signs of wear and tear—nor does it meet our patrons’ 21st century technology needs.
Throughout the years we have asked for your input on surveys, and this renovation reflects your ideas. More comfortable furniture. Quieter spaces. A bigger teen space. More power. More technology. Better bathrooms. And much more! You asked. We listened.
How long will the renovation take?
Construction will occur in three phases totaling six to eight months. Go to https://www.parkridgelibrary.org/renovation-2018/ to get detailed information of what you can expect during the project. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience during this project. But in the end, it will be well worth it.
What does the renovation cost?
The $2.3 million budget includes most areas of the Library and comprises construction costs, new flooring, furniture, shelving, upgraded lighting and remodeled bathrooms.
Who is responsible for the construction?
The architectural firm, Studio GC was hired to create innovative, functional spaces to inspire reading, sharing resources, accessing technology and connecting the community. Construction Solutions of Illinois was hired as the contractor.
Will we be assessed higher taxes to pay for the renovation?
No, the Library assessment on your tax bill will not increase. Community support of the 2014 Referendum provided funds for necessary building repairs and improvements. The renovation is funded by taxes already levied for the Library.
Why did this take so long to get started?
City building codes have changed since the Library was built in the 1950s. The scope of the renovation planning required additional time to comply with current safety standards.
Will the Library stay open?
Our goal is to maintain regular hours throughout the project. If at any time construction demands that we modify hours, we will keep patrons informed via our website.
Will it be noisy and dusty?
Our aim is to keep noise and dust at a minimum. The contractor plans to complete the “noisiest” projects early in the morning before the Library opens. Plastic dust barrier systems will be installed around all work areas.
Will the parking lot be affected?
The parking lot and drive-through book drops will be open. However, a number of spaces will be taken up by construction-related vehicles, storage and equipment.
What is changing?
The renovation will include a redesigned lobby with vestibule; new furniture and flooring; installation of more electric outlets; a larger media lab; additional study rooms on the second floor; a redesigned Children's department with new space for technology and study; relocation and expansion of the Teen Services department on the third floor; relocation of the Reference department service desk; new lighting on the south end of the second floor; and remodeled restrooms.

Will I be able to check out books?
Yes, you will be able to check out books. However, collections will be moving around to accommodate construction. Some items may be stored offsite and access will be limited during construction. We will keep you updated via our website. If you can’t find what you are looking for, please ask one of our staff members. We are here to help you throughout this process.
We are expanding our online collection of books, music and videos. These resources are available 24/7—with no dust and noise.
Will the computers/technology be available?
Computers, copiers, printers and the scan/fax stations will be available but moving around to accommodate construction. While we are building a new, larger Media Lab, there will be limited access to this equipment.
Will there be programming?
Yes, we will continue to offer programming for kids, adults and teens. However, some programs will be on hiatus or held offsite during construction. We are planning on several “pop-up” programs during the summer. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
Can I reserve a meeting room?
Unfortunately, the first and third floor meeting rooms will not be available during construction.
Are the study rooms open during construction?
Study rooms will be replaced with new expanded spaces and not available during Phase 2 of the construction.
