The library’s adult foreign language books are located on the second floor of the library in the Reference Department. Polish materials make up the largest portion of the collection with over 700 books! Spanish is the next largest collection with over 150 books. The rest of the foreign language collection is made up of small collections of French, German, and Italian books.
The foreign language magazines that the library subscribes to include five Polish language magazines:
Cosmopolitan, Forum, Prze Krog, Uroda and
Wprost. The library also subscribes to
Fra Noi (Italian),
Paris Match (French), and
People en Espanol (Spanish). These publications can be found by the foreign language books in the Reference Department. Older editions may be checked out for two weeks while the current issues are non-circulating. The library also subscribes to the Polish newspaper
Dziennik Zwiazkowy and this can be found with the rest of the newspapers on the second floor.
Due to a patron's generosity, the library now has issues of the Polish Magazines
Auto Swiat, Lotnictwo, Nowa Technika, Odkrywca, Poligon, Raport, and Skrzydlata Polska. To check out these new magazines see the Reference Staff.
Premium Resources
Mango Languages is a premium resources that provides language instruction anywhere a computer has internet access. All that is needed is a Park Ridge library card and the desire to learn.
Mango Languages provides visual and audio slideshow lessons to teach grammar, vocabulary, and important phrases. The languages currently available include Arabic (Levantine), Chinese (Mandarin), Dari, Farsi (Persian), French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Pashto, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish (Latin America), Tagalog, Thai, Turkish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.
Mango also provides ESL lessons for native speakers of Arabic (Egyptian), Chinese (both Cantonese and Mandarin), German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Turkish, and Vietnamese.
