Teachers

Welcome
I am Eileen Rosenberg, the School Services Coordinator of the Children's Services Department and I would like to personally welcome you to the Teacher Page on the Park Ridge Public Library's website.  The Library and the schools share a common interest in the development of the young people of Park Ridge. With that in mind, I encourage you to take advantage of the programs, materials and services that we provide for you and your students.

As a teacher, you have an opportunity to expose children to the challenge and excitement of reading and libraries. We, in the Children's Department, look forward to sharing this opportunity with you!

Assignment Alerts

When your entire class is working on a single project, an Assignment Alert will let the Library know so we can best prepare to meet the students' needs when they arrive at the Park Ridge Public Library. There are several ways to communicate this information to us:

    • Fax the form to us at (847) 825-0001
    • Just stop by or call us at (847) 825-4527.
    • Please feel free to use the forms on this site. If you need additional hard copies of the forms, please call us at 825-4527.
    • Assignment Alert links are weblinks from the Children's Services Department website to specific Internet sites that may be helpful and appropriate for the  students in your classroom. Students can click on your class name and assignment on our web page to link to these specially chosen sites. Please let us know several weeks in advance of an assignment if you wish us to include web sites for your class.

Battles,  Blogs, Clubs and Other Reading Incentives

The Children's Department offers teachers many ways to entice their students to become avid and interested readers.
There are Summer and Family (Winter) Reading Clubs for all ages and reading abilities.  Also for all ages, our Reading Patch Club offers children the chance to earn over 20 different patches by choosing to read books from a wide variety of subject areas.

Beginning or advanced readers can win great hockey related prizes for reading 100 or more minutes per week during our yearly "Chicago Wolves Read to Succeed" promotion.  4th and 5th graders gather with their coaches in the fall and begin to prepare for the Battle of the Books which takes place each January and February.  For six weeks, schools attend meets where they attempt to answer questions about any of  the 60 books on our yearly Battle of the Books Reading List.

Teachers looking for good books to share with their classes can access one or both of our book blogs.  "What We're Reading" is a listing of books we've been reading.  It's available through Librarything.com and is searchable by grade, genre or reading/interest level.  Covering mostly fiction for readers from 3rd through 6th grade, there are currently more than 850 books to choose from and the number is continually growing.  Finally, every month the Children's staff review their favorite books of that month on our second blog, "Books We Love."  Besides a critical look at new books and classics, teachers will enjoy the occasional author interviews found there.

Library Lines
Each month from September through June I write an online newsletter, Library Lines.  The purpose of Library Lines is to inform teachers in grades K-5 about services and resources for their use  at the Park Ridge Public Library, acquaint them professional development programs that we present here at the Library, suggest web links of interest and introduce them to new, interesting books or series that they may want to use to enhance their lesson plans.  Teachers in Park Ridge automatically get Lines through their school's LRC.  However, any teacher who would like to, can receive the newsletter.  Just contact me and I'll add your name to the mailing list.  In the same vein, if you would like to unsubscribe, click the link at the bottom of the newsletter and you'll be removed from the list.

School Services FAQs
There's one place that teachers can go to answer most of their questions about the terrific services and resources of the Park Ridge Public Library, Schools Services FAQs.  From Assignment Alerts to web resources, they fins the details about how the library can help them and their classes

School Loans
The Children's Services Department offers school loans to the teachers in Park Ridge schools to supplement the resources that are available in their school libraries and classrooms. Teachers may either request that the public librarians pull books on a topic or specific titles.  The teacher may also come in and select books themselves for the school loan.

Park Ridge teachers who do not
work in town may also call and ask for books to be pulled.  We will be happy to make a selection of books and hold them fort heir approval.  Any that they wish to take may be checked out on their personal card.  All books checked out this way are the personal responsibility of the teacher.  Books that are returned late are subject to regular library fines.
