Winter Reading Club 2012
Read for a Winning Season: A Family Reading Club
All Families
January 2 – February 29
Go for the goal this winter! Work with your family as a team to complete 10 plays and score a touchdown in our Winter Reading challenge! Read with at least one other family member and complete some fun activities as a family for your chance to win a $100 gift card. Register in the Children’s Services Department.
 
Start Thinking Hockey!   Grades 1 – 8
January 2 – February 29
Be a player! Get in the reading game! Join the Chicago Wolves’ “Read to Succeed” program. Have fun reading and trying for Wolves’ prizes. Register in the Children’s Services Department.
 
Wolves Player Visit     Grades 1-8
Thursday, March 1
4:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Kids who are registered in the Chicago Wolves “Read to Succeed” program and their families are invited to the Library to meet a Chicago Wolves player. Get an autograph and a close-up look at all of the hockey gear, and find out what it’s like to play pro hockey!
Tickets available beginning Saturday, February 18.

Merry Music Makers   1 month – 5 years
Join us for a family music class for children with a parent/caregiver. It will include singing, dancing, instrument play, and just plain fun! Max: 15    Limit one class per month.

Toddler Science   18 months – 3 years

Join us for a different science project every other month geared for the youngest learners.
Max: 15    Limit one class per month. Registration begins Saturday, January 21.
 
Little Tykes Playgroup         2 – 4 yearswith an adult
Thursdays, January 19 – February 23        11:00 – 11:45 a.m.
Come with your children to be part of our playgroup. A great opportunity for kids to play and socialize with other children. A great opportunity for parents to socialize, too. Drop in.
Foreign Language Storytimes Presented by Language Stars   2 – 6 years
Join us for storytimes presented entirely in a foreign language. Language Stars of Park Ridge will present storytimes using their FUNimmersion technique, led by a native speaker of that language. Max: 30

Readers & Leaders   3 – 6 years with an adult
This reading readiness program uses hands-on activities to promote early literacy and cognitive development in young children. Activities will be carefully chosen to enhance children’s literacy experience and caregivers will be given tips and training on how everyday interactions can be used to enhance children’s aptitude for reading. Please make every effort to be available for all four sessions. Max: 24 children This program is made possible by a generous donation from The Friends of the Library and Chicago Software Ventures, Inc.
 
            Wednesdays, February 8, 15, 22, 29             2:00 – 2:45 p.m.
            Registration begins Saturday, January 21.
 
Discovery Days    All Ages
Friday, February 10             10:00 – 11:30 a.m.
Drop by with your little ones. We’ll have crafts, activities and lots of fun each month as we discover topics of interest to toddlers and preschoolers in the Children’s Department. Drop in.
 
 
SCHOOL AGE PROGRAMS 
 
Brickton Art Center Classes                                  Grades 2 - 6
Come to the Library for these special monthly art classes taught by Brickton Art Center instructors. Max: 18   Limit one class per month.

Explore! Magnets!  Grades 4 – 6
Wednesday, February 22                 3:45 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.
Magnet races, bedroom makeovers and contests are just a few things that you can do with magnets. Come and learn the science behind these powerful tools while competing with your friends in several magnet-based activities.  Max: 24   Registration begins Saturday, February 4.
 
 
TEACHER PROGRAM
 
There's an APP for That: Apps for Teachers and Classrooms
Wednesday, February 22                 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Certified Google Apps Trainers Derrick Wlodarz and Michael Cannizzo will demonstrate applications for teachers who use the iPad. Learn about organizational and classroom management tools, as well as Apps that encourage learning in elementary school children. CPDU and continuing education credits available. Max: 20. Registration begins Saturday, February 4.
 


Registration
Unless otherwise noted, registration for Children’s Services programs is for children only. You may register in person, by phone or online. Tickets must be picked up at the Library; we cannot hold tickets for you. Please don’t be a "no show"! If you are unable to attend, please call so we can make that place available to another child.  Note: By attending a program at the Library, participants (or their guardians) give permission for the Library to take pictures for use in Library publications.
